Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'Dawn' for New York City in Inaugural Address
On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.
A Historic Figure
The young political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.
Defying counsel to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”
Governing with Socialist Ideals
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.
The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.
A Sweeping Policy Agenda
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:
- Subsidized daycare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for about 1 million households
- A pilot of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing External Headwinds
The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
