Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at both ends of pitch

After a drab weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on target, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

What next for both teams?

Everton: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round League Cup match against the Magpies.
