"When are you interviewing the band?" a message arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a key snag: I also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Several celebrated admirers have also coveted the role.

One thing is obvious something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy nominees.

Similar to the best ensembles, they're a tight-knit trio. Their videos repeatedly depict them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such unfettered joy you inevitably think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the ultimate honor. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate others to form a group."

"So anyone gets an invitation to be the fourth part of the family."

Grammy Recognition

The group are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the nomination isn't lost on the trio.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major achievement," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record was born from a phase of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The themes detail endings and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real life who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent toughness called for a new sound – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The band's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating horror stories.

Someone ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their place in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an international fan base.

Yet the sister act will always be their primary priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still going strong."
